SINK OR SURFACE PRESENTS: OBSERVING WINTER
ABOUT THE FILM:
"As winter approaches we wait in anticipation for sizeable waves and rides that we can hold onto until the next year rolls around. However, the reality of winter can be a harsh and lonely one. As the days get shorter and the temperature drops the daily grind of life becomes a whole lot tougher. The line ups empty out and only a selected few continue to push on through the cold winter months. This is a film that observes five independent and passionate watermen during winter, whose love for the ocean continues to grow regardless of how perfect that conditions are."
Growing up my brother and I would surf this dirty slab just a short drive from our house. Mum would tell us the water quality was no good but we didn’t really listen, because as the winter set in the only people we were sharing this spot with was a couple of lonely stingrays. Moving cities, I am now situated on the other end of the North Island and so I wanted to create a project to meet and observe the lifestyle of like minded watermen who continue to chase waves with the same passion as we did during the long winter months.
